MAINTENANCE WORKER
Under the routine supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, Plant Supervisor, or Crew
Leader performs entry-level work in the maintenance, construction and repair of Utility
Services facilities and water and sewer lines.
Temporary worker will be assigned to individual Water and Wastewater Treatment
Plants County-wide. Below are the minimum requirements:
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
Ability to stand and walk for 5-8 hours
Ability to work with odors, grease and chemicals (such as lime and bleach) Ability
to work outside in heat and humidity
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing Ability to do simple
math calculations and measurements Must possess a valid Florida driver s license

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties vary depending on whether area of assignment is in
the field or at a treatment facility. The listed duties are illustrative only and are not
intended to describe each and every function which may be performed. The omission of

Field Maintenance Worker: Digs ditches manually for line excavation and pipe line
installation. May assist in TV surveying, grouting, fitting pipe, locating lateral sewer lines
and operating the sewer cleaner vacuum. Under supervision, may be required to
operate mechanical equipment such as concrete demolition saws, demolition hammers,
backhoes, generators and trash pumps. Performs line maintenance by assisting in
locating the problem, digging out the area, and applying materials and fittings to repair
the problem. Assists in repairing water, sewer and reclaimed water lines. Assists in TV
surveys of utility lines to assure a new installation meets specifications for cleanliness
and construction requirements. May assist in adjusting manholes for elevation. Assists
in clearing main line stoppages with jet cleaner and steel cables. Performs related work
as assigned.
Water/Wastewater, Septage and Sludge Plants Maintenance Worker: Performs work in
the general maintenance and repair of the equipment used in water, wastewater,
septage and sludge plants. Follows an assigned preventive maintenance schedule for
designated plants and may conduct regular maintenance inspections on the equipment
used in the plants. Operates power and hand tools used in the repair of mechanical
equipment such as a drill press, power saw, grinder and welding or cutting torch.
Performs routine maintenance on tools. Provides assistance to the Electrician and
Treatment Plant Operators assigned to the plant in making repairs. Cleans treatment
plant structures and equipment. Makes any required entries into log books.
Performs routine landscaping, janitorial and housekeeping duties. Performs related
work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The knowledge, skills and abilities identified in
this job specification represent those needed to perform the duties of this work. Some
knowledge of manual labor involving construction activities. Ability to follow instruction
regarding the principles and practice of utility line and facility construction, maintenance
and repair. Ability to communicate effectively, orally. Ability to establish effective
working relationships.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: This is physically demanding work. Work involves exposure to
hazardous materials, chemicals, odors, noise, moving machinery and the weather.
