Job Description

SWIM INSTRUCTOR

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS

Under the close supervision of the Head Swim Instructor, Pool Manager or Recreation Superintendent performs varied routine duties in teaching swim lessons in accordance with City and Department policies. Work requires flexible hours (mornings and evenings. May be required to perform lifeguard duties when necessary, only if swim instructor is also current in Red Cross lifeguard certification. Performs other work as required.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintains class attendance reports and course records.

Performs general housekeeping practices in the aquatic facility.

Provides a safe and positive environment for class participants.

Communicates regularly with participants and patrons as appropriate, regarding student progress.

Prepares and delivers technical guidance, age appropriate, and skill focused lessons based upon participant s abilities.

Completes incident/accident reports as necessary.

Job Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

A. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Must be able to obtain Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification and maintain certification throughout employment.

Must be able to obtain Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer Certification and maintain throughout employment

Must be able to swim 25 yards (1 length of the pool) front crawl (freestyle), back crawl (backstroke), breaststroke, elementary backstroke, side stroke and 15 yards butterfly.


Must have working cell phone and email address for contact purposes.

B. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of current swimming techniques, CPR, and First Aid.

Ability to effectively interpret and implement Red Cross curriculum and guidelines for swim lessons.

Ability to determine the appropriate skill level for participants.

Ability to communicate effectively with the public

C. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift and rescue pool users who are in need of assistance.

Ability to see clearly.

Ability to hear.

Ability to communicate verbally.

Ability to work in heat, humidity, wetness, and around noise, fumes and odors.

You will be required to work a schedule that varies- including early hours, weekends and evenings, you will also be rotating between all three of the City of Melbourne Pool locations
