RECREATION AIDE I

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS

This is a sub-professional position, working under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor, working with minors in assisting with organizing and supervising play and recreational activities. Requires the ability to work flexible hours.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

o Assists in monitoring participants of a summer camp, program, playground, field trips, or recreation center in conducting activities; distributes equipment for games.
o Helps to maintain order and discipline;
o Assists in enforcing rules and regulations of proper facilities use, keeps score, and maintains order of recreational areas, free of litter
o Checks equipment to assure that it is clean and in proper working order.
o Performs related clerical work. .
o Provides information on center activities.
o Performs Janitorial duties as needed.
o Helps plan, carry out, and evaluate projects and activities for campers
o Responsible for checking in and checking out of minors in camp program
o Helps maintain order and discipline
o Promotes camper participation in ALL activities.
o Works with the camp directors and other camp staff to solve difficulties with facilities, programs and campers.
o Assists in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
o Organizes and leads a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, sports, games, songs, swimming, etc. This includes time spent on the bus.
o Ensures that the site is kept clean and organized.
o Helps write and implement a weekly schedule for your camp group.
o Ensures the safety, well-being and personal growth of campers.
o Performs related work as required.

Job Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

A.TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age at time of hire. Some related experience in working with children preferred. Certification in Adult/Child CPR and Standard First Aid preferred. Be able to pass a Level II background check. Able to swim preferred.

B. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of a variety of recreational activities and the rules and regulations governing the play of these games.

Knowledge of how to set up sites for various activities i.E., ballgames, inside table games.

Ability to work flexible hours.

Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous relationships with the public, co-workers and supervisors.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to set up tables/chairs for various functions and perform janitorial duties.

Ability to work effectively with children of all ages.

Ability to read and write English.

Ability to maintain simple records.

Ability to perform simple clerical work.

Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently.

Knowledge and ability to organize group activities as needed.

Ability to support and connect with campers and staff.

Ability and willingness to learn on the job in an environment that changes quickly.

Ability to maintain strong communication skills, positive attitude, initiative, flexibility, dependability, creativity and ability to work and problem solve.

Demonstrated responsibility, dependability, and being punctual.

C. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift and move 8 ft. Tables and chairs and perform janitorial duties

May be required to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. In various forms

Ability to walk, run, and participate in activities which requires physical dexterity.

Ability to understand and communicate with co-workers and children.
Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical abilities to act swiftly in an emergency situation.

Ability to work effectively around noise; and in areas of cold, heat, dust, dirt and various odors.

Ability to deal with stressful situations that arise in a normal day including but not limited to verbal or physical conflicts.

Mental and physical ability to deal with high stress situations and work well under pressure

Ability to comprehend and carryout oral and written instructions.

May be required to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time.
