LIFEGUARD

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS

Under the supervision of the Recreation Superintendent, Lifeguards are employed to supervise the aquatics area while facilities are in use. In addition, lifeguards are employed to perform any other assigned duties when not actively serving in the role as a lifeguard. Work requires flexible hours (mornings and evenings). Performs other work as required.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Recognize and respond effectively in emergency situations by activating the Emergency Action Plan (EAP).

Actively guards and scan the pool area at all times; refrains from socializing while guarding

Communicate and enforce all pool policies and rules in a personable and professional manner.

Document any incidents and/or injuries

Cleans the pools, deck, and bathrooms.

Attend and participate in regular in-service trainings.

Inspects Pool and surrounding area periodically each day for safety and cleanliness of the facility.

Job Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

A. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Must be able to obtain Red Cross Lifeguard, Red Cross Advanced First Aid and CPR for the Professional certifications and maintain certification throughout employment.

Must be able to swim 100 yards (2 full swimming pool laps).

Must have working cell phone and email address for contact purposes.

B. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to meet all Red Cross standards.

Ability to communicate with the pool users and public.

Ability to use chemical labels as they relate to the pool.

Ability to perform First Aid and CPR techniques as taught by the Red Cross.

C. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift and rescue pool users who are in need of assistance.

Ability to see clearly.

Ability to hear.

Ability to communicate verbally.

Ability to work in heat, humidity, wetness, and around noise, fumes and odors.
