CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
: Under routine supervision, performs entry level service work
maintaining and making simple repairs to County grounds, buildings, roads, parks and other facilities.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

to the position.)
Assists skilled workers in carpentry, painting, plumbing, brick, masonry, and cement work, as well as assists
in building, rebuilding and repairing sewer and water lines, manholes, and catch basins. Installs and repairs
sidewalks, curbs, gutters, sewer and water lines.
Cleans and brushes debris from roadside, median strips, rights-of-way and other areas using hand mowers
and mowing tractors. Cleans ditches and swales with brush cutters, shovels or other tools. Digs new ditches
with hand tools or power driven equipment, builds retaining walls, places sandbags and related tasks.
Operates light equipment; such as, mowing tractors and trash and crew trucks. May move pieces of heavy
equipment as required. Assists in the service and repair of such equipment.
Provides general care, maintenance and custodial duties in and around buildings, grounds, parks and other
facilities. Cuts and edges grass using hand tools and power operated equipment. Plants trees and shrubs and
provides care by watering and fertilizing. Sweeps walks, removes refuse and trash. Cleans buildings, picnic
and camping areas and restrooms.
Installs new and replaces old road signs, erects barricades, assists in patching roads. May act as flagman
directing traffic.
Loads and unloads heavy materials from trucks, vans and other equipment.
Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
: No formal training or experience required. See knowledge, skills and
abilities section for requirements of this class.
Special Requirements
: Up to April 1, 1992, may be required to possess or obtain, prior to employment,
either a valid Florida Chauffeur's license or an appropriate, valid Florida Commercial Driver's license with
appropriate endorsements depending on the area of assignment. After April 1, 1992, may be required to
possess or obtain, prior to employment, an appropriate valid Florida Commercial Driver's license including
appropriate endorsements depending on area of assignment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
:

materials used in construction, repair and maintenance projects.
Skill in the safe and efficient use of hand and power operated equipment required in the area of assignments.

Ability to operate light automotive vehicles and less complex public work equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
: This is heavy physical work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
: Work frequently is performed outdoors, and may involve exposure to dirt,
noise, moving machinery, fumes and extreme weather condition.
