Summer Camp Counselor
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
This is a sub-professional position, working under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor, working with minors in assisting in organizing and supervising play and recreational activities. Requires the ability to work flexible hours.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
o Assists in monitoring participants of a summer camp, program, playground, field trips, or recreation center in conducting activities; distributes equipment for games.
o Helps to maintain order and discipline;
o Assists in enforcing rules and regulations of proper facilities use, keeps score, and maintains orderliness of recreational areas, free of litter
o Checks equipment to assure that it is clean and in proper working order.
o Performs related clerical work. Drafting flyers and activity schedules on the computer and answers telephones. Provides information on center activities.
o Performs Janitorial duties as needed.
o Helps plan, carry out, and evaluate projects and activities for campers
o Responsible for checking in and checking out of minors in camp program
o Helps maintain order and discipline
o Promote camper participation in ALL activities.
o Work with the camp directors and other camp staff to solve difficulties with facilities, programs and campers.
o Have a willingness to play with the kids and make a fool of yourself for the sake of making a kid smile.
o The desire and ability to work in a cooperative, team-oriented atmosphere
o Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
o Desire and ability to work with children of all ages
o Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, sports, games, songs, games, swimming, etc. This includes time spent on the bus.
o Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter.
o Help write and implement a weekly schedule for your camp group.
o Demonstrated responsibility, dependability, and being punctual.
o Must exhibit patience and understanding.
o Must be capable of working under pressure in a somewhat disruptive environment.
o Ensure the safety, well-being and personal growth of campers. Be an active and supportive member of the Summer Camp team and a positive member of the City of Melbourne staff. Summer Camp Counselors must demonstrate positive, professional role modeling at all times, acting in a manner that is consistent with the City code of conduct and the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the City of Melbourne Parks and Recreation Department.
o Requires strong communication skills, positive attitude, initiative, flexibility, dependability, creativity and ability to work and problem solve.
o Performs related work as required.
